Confirm your pregnancy first

If you think you might be pregnant, you might feel overwhelmed at the very thought of being pregnant. You might be considering options like abortion.

Before making your decision, it is very important to have your pregnancy confirmed with a medical test. There are many reasons that you could have missed your period or that you are experiencing other symptoms of pregnancy. There is no need to make an abortion decision now if you have not taken a medical grade pregnancy test yet. Even if you’ve taken a home test, it’s wise to follow up with a medical-grade test and possibly an ultrasound. We can provide pregnancy confirmation for you at FCC.

Why get an ultrasound?

1. An ultrasound is a highly effective tool in determining if your pregnancy is viable (living)

An abortion procedure is performed on women who have a viable pregnancy. About 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is extremely important to know how far along you are in your pregnancy, as complications from chemical (pill form) abortions rise, especially after 10 weeks gestation.

2. Ultrasounds can determine if your pregnancy is in your uterus

Ectopic pregnancy is a rare but highly dangerous condition where the baby begins to grow outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. It is life-threatening for mom and pregnancy, requiring emergency medical care. This is why it is critical to have an ultrasound to determine if the pregnancy is inside the uterus. If the abortion pill is taken during an ectopic pregnancy, it can result in a life-threatening emergency.

3. An ultrasound will measure how far along you are

Abortion procedures vary depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. It is extremely important to know how far along you are before taking the pill, because it becomes less effective the farther along you are. This can lead to complications, such as an incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, infection, fever, chills, and headache.

Types of abortions – Surgical and Chemical (pills)

Chemical abortion is the most used method of ending a pregnancy. However, it was approved by the FDA under the Emergency Authorization Act during Covid to be prescribed by mail as well as in person. With little to no medical oversight (supervision by medical personnel), complications from taking the abortion pills have risen dramatically with as many as 25% of women going to the emergency department from pain, hemorrhage and infection.

Surgical abortion (D&C) is also available for approximately the same cost as the abortion pill. The risks for surgical abortion are similar to those of the abortion pill. However, there is at least some medical oversight.

It is critical to your health to confirm you have a live pregnancy in your uterus before deciding to take the abortion pill.
